Immersive Experience Design

Overview

Environments designed from the inside out.

The question VSS asks at the start of an immersive commission is what the audience feels, not what they see. The technical architecture exists to serve that answer.

The research and development that happens at VS Immersive focuses on accessible innovation. Finding new ways that audiences can experience light, visuals, and sound as a single coherent system with an emotional and narrative arc. Not impressive for its own sake. Designed to affect people.

For cultural commissions the process starts with the place. The local history, the stories that are already known and taught, the community groups and historians and storytellers who hold that knowledge. The work is stronger when the community takes ownership of it. That means doing the research before a single frame of content gets made.

The technical process for large-scale projection work starts with Lidar scanning the building and converting the 3D scan into clean topology for the animation team. Scripts, style frames, storyboards. Projection requirements and lumen output determined before the creative is finalised. The content and the technical infrastructure develop together rather than one after the other.

Spatial audio changes the experience design entirely. When sound can be positioned on all three axes, the relationship between the audio and the visual programming becomes a dialogue rather than a parallel track. The audio team and the visual team work in a bidirectional workflow, feeding content loops back and forth until the placement is right. Time code keeps everything locked.

VSS designs immersive experiences for cultural institutions, festivals, brand activations, and public commissions. The work ranges from single-building projection mapping to multi-site trails to permanent and tourable installations.

Common Questions

Every brief starts with a detailed conversation about the context, the venue, and the audience. We develop the design from the physical reality of the space, not from a library of pre-existing solutions.

VSS works from intimate gallery installations through to arena-scale productions. The scale of the project does not change the rigour of the process. We apply the same approach whether the brief is for 200 people or 20,000.

The earlier the better. Our ability to influence the design and technical specification is greatest at the earliest stage. We are experienced in working with incomplete briefs and can contribute to the development of the concept as well as the delivery.
