Tour visuals are a design system, not a content pack. The difference matters at the moment a show moves from the venue it was built for to the next one on the run.
VSS approaches tour visual creation from a show-first position. The content needs to work in the absence of light as well as on a laptop screen. It needs to react intuitively to the music. It needs to hold up when the screen design changes between venues, when the pixel map is different, when the rig is different.
The creation process moves across disciplines. Analogue: filming in-camera, building sets, working with choreographers and contemporary dance studios to capture human form as content that feels physical rather than rendered. Generative: TouchDesigner for real-time systems. 3D: Cinema 4D and Octane. 2D animation: After Effects. Real-time workflows in Resolume using Chaser and Stage Flow to push the limits of what the software can produce with content re-edited live.
Content is built at the lower end of the BPM range. If an artist typically plays between 140 and 160, VSS builds at 140. You can speed content up. You can't slow it down without dropping frames.
The handover to the touring operator is a pre-built show file advanced to the pixel map. Pre-baked visuals cannot be edited on the fly without a real-time infrastructure investment on the front end of the tour. Understanding that constraint early changes the brief.
VSS also develops original visual IP. Content designed to treat the screen as a lighting fixture. Block colours. Layers of intensity. Set to a core BPM. Designed to work across multiple show designs without losing coherence.
