An original installation.
PYRA is a tourable immersive installation designed to deploy on standard rental equipment. The constraint was deliberate. Most immersive installations require bespoke infrastructure that limits where they can go. PYRA was engineered from the start to work in venues that already exist.
The installation uses L-Acoustics L-ISA spatial audio across 18 channels of Dante. The speaker system is mapped in three dimensions. Sound moves through the space in relation to the visual programming, not alongside it. The score is original, composed by Ryan Vail.
The visual and audio programming were developed in a bidirectional workflow. Visual content loops were created and fed to Ryan Vail for spatial audio placement refinement. Everything locked to time code. The result is a system where the sound and the light are designed as a single experience rather than two departments working in parallel.
