Projection Mapping

Overview

Surfaces as screens. Buildings as canvases.

← All Services

Large-scale projection mapping at VSS starts with the building. Lidar scanning, 3D topology, animation templates built to the exact geometry of the surface. The content is designed to the structure, not scaled to fit it.

VSS has delivered projection mapping across architectural sites, festival stages, cultural venues, and purpose-built water screens. The Lú Festival of Light included a custom 20-metre wide water screen on the River Boyne. High-pressure pumps secured for both tides, 30,000 lumen output, media signal distribution across 150 metres. This installation ran for two consecutive years on a highly tidal river during stormy conditions. It had not been done on this river before.

The Illuminate trail in Derry covered six sites across the city with 4 x 35,000 lumen projectors, 3 x 20,000 lumen projectors, and 2 x 12,000 lumen projectors. Each site had bespoke content, its own music score, and its own projection specification.

The technical and creative sides develop together. Lumen output, throw distance, projection surface, and content resolution are determined before the animation brief is written. The art direction and the engineering are the same conversation.

Common Questions

Every brief starts with a detailed conversation about the context, the venue, and the audience. We develop the design from the physical reality of the space, not from a library of pre-existing solutions.

VSS works from intimate gallery installations through to arena-scale productions. The scale of the project does not change the rigour of the process. We apply the same approach whether the brief is for 200 people or 20,000.

The earlier the better. Our ability to influence the design and technical specification is greatest at the earliest stage. We are experienced in working with incomplete briefs and can contribute to the development of the concept as well as the delivery.
