Brief

VSS was commissioned to deliver Lú Festival of Light in Drogheda, a large-scale outdoor projection and light festival rooted in Irish mythology and the history of the Boyne Valley. The creative framework was developed in collaboration with Anthony Murphy of Mythical Ireland, who mapped out a multi-year path of stories relevant to the land and the local area. These are stories known to the people of the region, taught in schools, rooted in academic and cultural record. The work does not import a narrative. It surfaces what is already there.

Approach

The centrepiece of the festival was a custom 20-metre wide water screen on the River Boyne. The river is highly tidal and the installation ran during stormy conditions. VSS engineered a high-pressure pump system secured for both tides. 30,000 lumen output. Media signal distribution across 150 metres. This installation ran successfully for two consecutive years. It had not been done on this river before. Projection mapping covered multiple sites across the town, each with bespoke content, music scores, and scripts developed specifically for the location. The commission was designed for inclusivity from the start, with bilingual versions explored to represent the Irish language alongside English.

Outcome

VSS handled all technical production, site infrastructure, subcontractor management, and content delivery across the full festival programme.
